Mini Excavator Insurance

A mini excavator earns its keep in places a full-size machine never gets near: side access digs, pool excavations, trenching along a fence line, tight residential blocks. It is usually towed on a trailer behind a ute rather than carried on a float, and it is just as likely to be dry hired out to a homeowner or another tradie as it is to be run by its owner. Machine Cover compares mini excavator insurance across multiple insurers and can place cover the same day.

Cover

What mini excavators need covered

Sized for a smaller machine

Mini excavators are generally worth a fraction of a full-size machine, and the sum insured should reflect that rather than being guessed from a bigger sibling's figure. Getting this right keeps the premium fair and the payout adequate if the worst happens.

Trailered on a car licence, not a float

Most mini excavators travel on a light trailer behind a ute or 4WD, towed on an ordinary car licence, rather than a low-loader under a heavy vehicle licence. That is a different transit exposure to a full-size machine, and it is worth confirming your cover actually reflects it.

Working close to the public and property

A mini dig usually happens near a fence line, a pool, a driveway or a neighbour's garden, not out on an open civil site. Public liability needs to reflect that proximity, since the range of things it could clip is different from a machine working in clear space.

Dry hire is the norm here, not the exception

A large share of mini excavators spend part of their working life dry hired out to homeowners, landscapers or other tradies without an operator. If that is how yours earns income, cover needs to follow it off your books and onto someone else's site.

Attachments built for tight spaces

Narrow trenching buckets, augers, rippers and small grabs are the usual kit on a mini excavator, scaled for tight-access work rather than bulk earthmoving. These can be insured alongside the machine so a stolen auger is not left uncovered.

Overnight storage and theft

A mini excavator is more likely to sit on a driveway, a suburban street or a small yard overnight than inside a secured compound, which changes the theft picture from a civil contractor's larger fleet. Where it is kept between jobs is worth telling us about.

Cover, limits and examples shown are general in nature and subject to eligibility, underwriting and the terms of the issued policy.
